Bounded recursion specifically restricts the number of recursive calls or depth of recursion allowed, ensuring efficient computation even for large inputs.

Formally, a bounded recursive function is one where there exists some fixed finite bound B on the number of allowed recursive calls during execution. This bound is typically defined using some property of the input. For example, a bounded recursive sort function might only recurse to a depth proportional to the log of the input array size. The key criteria are:

  • B is defined in terms of inputs (e.g. array length)
  • B ensures O(1) memory use per input size

The main tradeoff is slightly more complex logic to implement the depth tracking and bound limit. But with proper encapsulation inside functions/classes, this allows building clean interfaces that abstract away recursion depth details from callers.

Several techniques can optimize bounded recursive functions to minimize overhead and maximize computational efficiency. Carefully applying these methods allows leveraging recursion for fast performance.
